Materials
K-doh + Straws

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Read or tell the Three Little Pigs story together
  2. Use K-doh to build three different houses
  3. Make a straw house (K-doh + actual straws)
  4. Create a stick house (K-doh + small twigs)
  5. Build a brick house (solid K-doh blocks)
  6. Test each house with gentle 'wind' from a fan
  7. Discuss which materials worked best and why

Learning Goals:

Reading Comprehension: Story comprehension and retelling skills
Engineering Thinking: Understanding material properties and structural design
Critical Thinking: Cause and effect relationships in storytelling

Parent Spotlight: The Rodriguez Reading Family

My 7-year-old struggled with reading until we started making the characters and scenes with K-doh. Now he asks to read so we can build the story together. His comprehension has improved dramatically.
Maria's Method: Read a chapter, then sculpt the key scenes together while discussing what happened. This multi-sensory approach makes stories come alive and stick in memory.

Learning Corner: How Tactile Learning Enhances Reading

Multi-sensory learning activates more neural pathways than reading alone. When children create story elements with their hands, they're processing narrative structure, character development, and plot progression through multiple senses, leading to deeper comprehension and retention.

"Children who engage multiple senses while learning show 75% better retention than those using single-sense methods. The hands truly are the instruments of the mind."
— Dr. Lisa Park, Children's Literacy Specialist
